Landing on the beach at Peleliu in 1944 as a twenty-year-old new recruit to the US Marines, Eugene Sledge can only try desperately to survive. At Peleliu and Okinawa - two of the fiercest and filthiest Pacific battles of WWII - he witnesses the dehumanising brutality displayed by both sides and the animal hatred that each soldier has for his enemy.

During temporary lapses in the fighting, conditions on the islands mean that the Marines often can't wash, stay dry, dig latrines, or even find time to eat. Suffering from constant fear, fatigue, and filth, the struggle of simply living in a combat zone is utterly debilitating.

Yet despite horrendous conditions Sledge finds time to keep notes that he would later turn into a book.   • Gut wrenching!

    This book reveals the horrors of warfare rarely magnified in films or books. The maggots, the foul stench of rotting flesh,the persistent drenching of the body by rain, and the nightly infiltration of Japanese slitting a marines throat. Reading this book makes you wonder whether you could ever have withstood it yourself.

    This book is just amazing. It was a great book and one that I found hard to put down at times, although in some parts it is a little unnerving, but don't let that put you off! The way in which it was written gives you a real sense of the sheer terror and conditions that the military personnel involved in the war in the pacific during ww2 actually went through and lived in day and and night. Really brought home the cold truth about the complete brutality of war.... The guys who fought in these ferocious battles where one of a kind and I am truly grateful for the author of the book for sharing his story and the sacrifices each and everyone of them made so I can live my life in the way each and everyone of us has become accustomed too. The war in the pacific is the forgotten war in my eyes, but books like this lets people know just what went on for all those years on a few tiny islands in the middle of nowhere! I can't give this book anymore stars as 5 is the maximum but if I could of done I would of. Can't rate it highly enough.
