Two months before the outbreak of WWII, seventeen year old Geoffrey Wellum left school to become a fighter pilot with the RAF.     Geoffrey Wellum's story is truly moving, even if you know nothing of the Second World War or the Battle of Britain this book will immerse you in the thick of the action, adventure and emotions. I served in the Royal Air Force and can relate to and understand what he feels about comradeship and what it is like to serve in one of our country's finest armed services. I have had the privilege of meeting a Battle of Britain pilot (Dennis Robinson) and it seems to me that all of these amazing individuals have so much in common, in terms of loyalty, dedication and professionalism that is sadly lacking in so many areas of our modern world. If you want to read one of the most exciting and emotional accounts of the Battle of Britain than you would find no finer than that of Geoffrey Wellum's. First Light is a fine tribute to the few and what they did, we should never forget.

    The Senior Flying Instructor at Cranfield Flying School had this book and while my partner read the paper version I downloaded it to iBooks and have utterly enjoyed it! As a pilot myself I felt I was almost there in the sky with Geoff Wellum. Great story, could not put it down. History is so important. Sad that there are so few Spitfires left in working order now. A fabulous flying machine!

    A really good book to read. You do feel as though you are with the author at every step of the way. You feel his ups and downs. From reading this I think I could pretty much fly a spit, well start one up at least :). Thank you mr wellum for writing this book. It is something that history book can not do, give a personal insight to the day to day life of a spitfire pilot.

    This is a terrific true story written with great sincerity and feeling. I have now read it twice and it is still a very sincere and moving account of one young mans efforts in defending his country.

    Astonishing. This quietly written, eloquent narrative is one of the best books you will read. It exemplifies the unimaginable sacrifice that people who served at this time in our history went through. Youth given up, damaged and destroyed to protect society from a larger evil. As relevant today as a it has ever been. This should be required reading for everyone, very moving.

    This is the only biography from a Battle of Britain pilot available electronically in ANY bookstore. I have in my collection about 20 books on the battle of which about half are biographies. Luckily First Light is one of the best ever written, and by a pilot who is still with us. Written only recently we are lucky that Wellum's memory holds strong and we are teleported back to those days 70 years ago. We accompany him on the journey from school through pilots training on to the battle itself and beyond. It is an immersive read and written in such a way as you feel part of the action, especially in the nerve tingling air battle scenes. A great read; I have it in hardback, paperback, Kindle and now iBook. My feeling is that each purchase I make is not just an opportunity to re-read and remember probably the most important period of my countries history but in a small way pay homage to those 'few' brave men who gave all to protect the worlds civilised way of life. This year is the 70th anniversary of the battle and practically the last major anniversary where we have significant numbers of the 'few' still with us so I encourage any of you with an interest to buy this book as it is a great addition to your iBooks library and a small thank you to one of the hero's of the battle.
